52 books in 52 weeks: 2017

I like a challenge. Challenges motivate me to step up. In an ongoing effort to live my days on this planet with intentionality, I’ve started a new challenge to read 52 books in 52 weeks. Ideally, I would have heard of this idea before the new year. (I suppose that would have been a more conventionally clear-cut way of doing it.) But as it is, I found out about it in early February, but I’m not going to let that stop me. So my 52 books in 52 weeks won’t exactly align with the 2017 calendar, and that’s OK.


So, why am I doing this?


1. There is so much I want to read!

I have a loooooong list of books that are “on my list” … whether its my Amazon wishlist or my Pinterest boards … there is so much I want to enjoy and experience, or learn about and know before I die! 52 books in 52 weeks, honestly, will really just be a good start for me. Many of the books I want to read are non-fiction in the parenting and health/nutrition areas. But I like a good juicy piece of fiction occasionally, too.


2. It is a good use of my time.

I find that if I have a few minutes to myself, the time is easily absorbed (lost) with aimless checking of the phone. That’s not to say that I don’t read there, too, … but I want to have a lot more to show for my time!



3. It helps me unwind.

I’m working on reducing the screen time in my life. Some screen time is unavoidable. I do teach and blog, after all! But at the end of the day, after Little Bean is in bed and I have a little bit of time to catch my breath, reading is a healthy escape from the day’s toil.


4. It is nutritious activity for my brain.

Reading keeps my mind sharp. The more I read, the more I want to read. Its a healthy cycle that spins me into continued personal growth. I want more of that in my life.


5. It is good for Little Bean to see.

My mom read to me. We didn’t have much money at all when I was little, but I never noticed that or felt lacking. In fact, some of my best early memories with her are of our regular trips to the library. I can’t remember a time when she has not been a voracious reader. I feel certain that my current love of reading has a lot to do with her legacy, and I hope I can pass that along to my kids.


With that in mind, I will share the first 5 books I’ve read in the challenge thus far! (Affiliate links coming.)

  • Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng – A good page turner. Quick read. If you just want a good story you can escape in, this is fun.
  • Food Freedom Forever: Letting Go of Bad Habits, Guilt, and Anxiety Around Food by the Co-Creator of the Whole30 by Melissa Hartwig – Excellent. I will probably be re-reading this in the not-too-distant future. (I blogged about my ongoing food freedom journey back in January.)
  • The Nest by Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney – Well, I made it through. For all the hype, I felt that this book is completely overrated. My main issue with it was that it was smuttier than I care for. I suppose if I’m reading 52 books in 52 weeks, I’m going to find a dud here and there. No worries.
  • Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Street – DELIGHTFUL! I’d bought this one several years ago at our local used book store that, sadly, is now out of business. I’ve picked it up several times since, and put it back down because it didn’t seem flashy enough for me. But it obviously won the Pulitzer Prize for a reason! Writing is so skillful, and, without giving anything away, … you will love Olive. 🙂
  • One Thousand Gifts: A Dare to Live Fully Right Where You Are by Ann Voskamp – As of the writing of this post, I am not quite finished with this one (but close). I love Ann Voskamp for so many reasons (farmer’s wife and adoptive mama being at the top of the list). This is my first book by her, and I must say that it is wonderful and exhausting at the same time. I love the Scripture throughout her writing. Her poetic style is beautiful and challenging to follow.

    I’ve tried picking up some books over the last few months but haven’t made much progress 😕 Maybe I can join you in reading a book a week over the summer!

      That’s been me for about 2 years, Sharon! I can’t tell you how many (really great) books I’ve started and gotten 1/3 through, and set aside. Having an aggressive goal motivates me and I can magically find ways to fit it in.
